It’s almost the new year and it’s time to reflect on the past year.
One of the aspects of my life I’m very grateful for are my co-workers. Being a school counselor can be very stressful, but my colleagues and I help each other practice self-care. One of the self-care activities we enjoy the most is eating! We have lunch together everyday - we share stories and decompress together.
Most times we bring our own lunches, but on some days, we need what we call “comfort food” and order in.
We’re lucky to work in National City, California which has lots of food options near by.
As the end of the semester approached, we really needed some comfort food. We had talked at length about the chicken sandwich debate that hard become viral on social media, but we ourselves had not tried the challenge. So, on the last day of the semester, we ordered chicken sandwiches from:

As the end of the semester approached, we really needed some comfort food. We had talked at length about the chicken sandwich debate that hard become viral on social media, but we ourselves had not tried the challenge. So, on the last day of the semester, we ordered chicken sandwiches from:
- Kentucky Fried Chicken
- Popeyes
- Jollibee, popular fast-food chain from the Philippines
We cut up the sandwiches and had everyone do a blind taste test.
The KFC sandwich as the most basic. Bun, small breaded chicken patty in the “original” KFC style, a pickle, and some mayo. As the hipsters say “baaaaaaasic....”
Popeyes was the heartiest of all the sandwiches. A nice fat patty of chicken, battered in the crispy spicy style of Popeyes, with a few pickles and some mayo.
The Jollibee chicken sandwich had a simple bun just like the other two. The chicken was not as spicy as Popeyes, but has a nice crunch to it. It was nice that the crunch didn’t get soggy with the veggies and sauce in the sandwich. The sandwich also had a spicy mayo, tomato, lettuce, and pickles.
The five of us who participated in the chicken sandwich taste challenge, 3 of 5 favored the Jollibee chicken sandwich.
Haven’t heard of Jollibee? You must visit! Check out the Jollibee website to find your nearest location.
